Born in Newcastle (UK) in 2006, Leia’s love of violin stemmed from her love of the sound of bowed string instrument from a very early age.
Leia Zhu is currently a student at Guildhall School of Music and Drama (Junior Guildhall) in London (UK). She receives weekly violin lessons from Prof Itzhak Rashkovsky (UK) via private arrangement.
Leia attends New Virtuosi Queenswood masterclasses with prof. Itzhak Rashkovsky since 2013. Leia is also sponsored to attend Interlaken masterclasses (Zakhar Bron Academy) regularly with Prof. Zakhar Bron in Switzerland since 2013.
She plays a half sized Italian violin by Carlo Giuseppe Testore generously loaned by the London based Florian Leonhard Fine Violins.
Leia has participated at different national and international competitions. Amongst others, she was awarded
1st prize (Gold Nutcracker) in 16th International Television Context for Young Musicians ‘The Nutcracker’ (2015)
1st prize in XIII International Russian Rotary Children Music Competition 2015.
Grand Prix “Discovery of the competition” in the 11th International Competition “Young Virtuosos 2015”, Bulgaria.
She was the recipient of the Rotary international scholarship prize in XXI Concorso Violinistico Internazionale “Andrea Postacchini” Fermo 2014.
Absolute first prize on both violin and piano at the 15th Concorso Internazionale di Musica Euterpe 2013
Leia has already performed in wide range of events, concerts and gave recitals in UK, Russia, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Switzerland .
In 2010 at the age of four, Leia made her solo debut in the North East Last Night of the Proms in Newcastle City Hall in front of an audience of thousands.
At five, Leia toured four cities in the North of England as soloist with the English Philharmonic Ensemble.
At six, Leia made her European solo debut on a three week tour of 9 cities in Spain with the Los Angeles based Classical Concert Chamber Orchestra.
At seven, Leia as a soloist was accompanied by the Zakhar Bron Chamber Orchestra at a concert in Zurich.
And she also gave three sets of 45 minutes recitals with entirely different programmes in Switzerland and England within a space of 3 month in 2014.
At eight, Leia was invited among some of the most distinguished musicians including Maxim Vengerov, Vadim Repin and Iviry Gitlis as guest soloist to participate and play at ‘Musica Mundi’ festival with the festival orchestra in Belgium. Leia also performed in a special event at which the distinguished guests including ex German Councillor Gerhard Schröder in Wolfsburg. In addition, she gave two sets of 45 minutes recitals in Switzerland. And recently Leia as soloist returned Newcastle City Hall for the North East Last Night of Proms.
She has been featured on some of the most prestigious international media including the Strad, the violin channel, violinist.com, BBC News, ITV News, Sky TV as well as Bulgarian National TV, Spanish National TV and many other media.
Away from music making, Leia also loves creative writing, painting, drama, dancing, gymnastic, riding her bicycle, swimming and playing with her younger brother Leo.
