寮國境内大部分為山地和丘陵，地勢自東北向西南倾斜，山地、丘陵占全国面积的70%。上寮地勢最高，有"東南亞屋脊"之稱。川壙高原（镇宁高原）號稱"老撾屋脊"，其南邊的普比亞山海拔3,820米，為全國最高峰。湄公河自北而南纵贯全国，為最大河流（南烏冮是湄公河在老挝最大支流），沿岸有若干小型平原。

此外，老撾是東南亞国家的唯一内陆國，其國土分別與泰國、越南、柬埔寨、中國、緬甸接壤。

Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Burma and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south and Thailand to the west. Its population was estimated to be 6.5 million in 2012. Laos became independent in 1953, with a constitutional monarchy under Sisavang Vong. Shortly after independence, a long civil war ended the monarchy, when the Communist Pathet Laomovement came to power in 1975.

Laos is a single-party socialist republic. The capital city is Vientiane. The official language is Lao.
