Underwater Robots for 深海一号

The underwater robots maintaining China’s first home-made semi-submersible oil platform

A group of underwater robots is performing an important task in the depths of the South China Sea. They’re laying pipes and helping maintain what’s been described by Chinese state media as China’s first self-built semi-submersible oil platform.

The 90,718-metric-tonne (100,000 ton) Deep Sea No. 1 深海一号 will reportedly be commissioned soon, with the mammoth rig expected to enter service in June after several months of installation work. It’s then set to begin developing a gas field off the coast of Hainan province.
