1st China-Laos Railway freight train leaves Vientiane for China
Laos' capital Vientiane on Friday 12/3/21 witnessed the departure of the first cargo train of the China-Laos Railway, a 1,035-km cross-border railway. The new 414km (257 miles) Laos section, expected to open in December 2021, is part of a Pan-Asia rail 泛亞鐵路 route that will eventually connect China to Singapore.
The China-Laos Railway will be the first of China’s Belt and Road Initiative projects to be completed in mainland Southeast Asia.
磨萬鐵路（又名老中鐵路、中老鐵路、泛亞鐵路老撾段）是建設中的一條自中華人民共和國雲南省西雙版納傣族自治州勐臘縣 磨憨站 至老撾人民民主共和國首都 萬象 的160公里的國鐵一級電氣化單線鐵路，設計時速為160公里，正線建築長度414.332公里，總投資約374億元人民幣，於2016年12月全線動工，2017年中進入整體施工狀態，一周2021年12月建成通車。
47％的鐵路將通過隧道，15％將通過高架橋，分佈在75個隧道和167座橋樑上。
該項目的成本估計為59.5億美元，由老撾直接融資12％，中國為28％，其餘60％由貸款融資。鐵路將采用雙方合作建設和管理方式(BOT)，特許經營期50年。
